New York, New York City, NYC is also known as the city that never sleeps or the Big Apple.

New York State is known as the Empire State.

    New York City skyline

The skyline is the line formed on the horizon by the tops of NY's many skyscrapers.

A few skycrapers (activity pages 60 and 61)

A The Flatiron : one of the oldest buildings in the city / steel structure / looks like a triangle, an iron or the front of a cruise ship.

B The United Nations Organization headquarters / built in 1952 / modern ; simple structure ; international style / lots of flags

C The Chrysler building / 1930 / Art Deco building

D Time Square / billboards / neon lights / Broadway

E The Guggenheim Museum / modern / looks like a big white ribbon / built by famous architect Frank lloyd Wright

The Empire State Building - Compréhension orale

Empire State Building : named after the Empire State (NY state) - 2nd tallest building in the US and 9th in the world at the time it was built in 1930 / 443 meters high.

It was designed to look like a sharpened pencil and the spire was designed so that zeppelins could dock there.

However, because of the fog around the top of the tower, this idea was abandonned after a B25 Bomber crashed into the 79th floor causing the crew and 11 office workers to die.

A woman called Betty Lou Oliver, who was in an elevator at the time fell 300 meters and survived! a real miracle!

In 1994, a French man called Alain "Spiderman" Robert climbed the ESB with nothing but his hands and feet.

There's mostly office space in the building but also an observation platform with a spectacular view on the 86th floor.

    Ellis Island - Compréhension orale

For most of the millions who arrived in Ellis Island, the Statue of Liberty embodies the dream of a new life. For some it eventually came true while for others it remained only a dream. Place of disappointment within sight of a towering symbol of hope.

She (the statue) appears suddenly : the embodiment of the American Dream so close and yet far away.

She beckons the tired the poor, the huddled masses yearning to be free.

Starting in 1892 for 60 years, 12 million immigrants came through Ellis Island.

In 1907 more than 11000 arrived in one day.

The immigrants climbed the steep stairs into the Great Hall where doctors examined them and decided who was free to go, others were held for treatment and possible deportation.

The immigrant processing centre closed in 1954 was restored and is now a museum.

racist abuse / racism in football

    Experience, opinions and solutions :

He remembers a player called John Barnes who was a target for racism.

He says groups of racist fans feel safe and powerful and they insult and make rude gestures.

He remembers another player who suffered a torrent of abuse and monkey noises because he was black. Mr Winterbottom was really shocked.

Solutions : the police should eject disrespectful supporters from the grounds.  They already arrest some of them.

Mr W. thinks it's not enough : he believes that supporters themselves should make a stand when they witness racist behaviours.  They should report racist fans. He is radical: he says these fans should have their season tickets taken off them for life.

the transatlantic slave trade and its consequences

In text 1, we see that trading with the colonies really changed Europeans' consuming habits and diet when they started consuming products like sugar, coffee, tobacco...

In text 2, we also see another consequence : slave owners made large profits and invested their money in Great Britain's economy.  As a consequence, it became a flourishing industrial country.

(economy & money : successful, fortunes, wealth, benefit from, increase, economic, industrial)

In text 3, we discover the involvement of Liverpool in the European slave trade.  It started in 1699 and demand for products from the colonies increased so more slaves were needed.  By the 1740s, more than 1.5 million African slaves had been transported by Liverpool ships. The port was well located and all the prominent people were involved.

  • January 7th :

    the Lewis and Clark expedition

    text page 74

When the Louisiana Territory was purchased (= bought) from France in 1803, President Jefferson decided to send a group of explorers there to achieve a certain number of goals :

They were to discover and bring back notes on nature (plants and animals, climate and geography).

He wanted them to find a northwest passage to the coast via a water route for trade.

They were asked to bring back maps of this unchartered territory.

    January 9th:

Oral comprehension : Who were they?

The Lewis and Clark expedition was the result of many dreams, hopes and ambitions. It was a large enterprise. Approximately 50 people participated, led by Lewis and Clark. Among them, were some of the best scientific minds of the day, some people of European and Native descent, one Afro-American and eventually one Native American woman and her infant son.

Lewis was 29 years old and Clark was 33.  They were both single and both army veterans. They were skilled hunters too., They were also brave, resourceful, smart and funny.

Lewis had a more formal education as Jefferson's personal secretary. He was a doctor and studied the medicinal quality of plants. Clark was the map-maker, the cartographer.  He was also the better boatman and the more consistent journalist. He was more level-headed and had a longer happier life.

May 1804 : the expedition departed from St Louis in Missouri

Itinerary : they left from St Louis and went up across the Continental Divide (ligne de partage des eaux) through the mountains via the Snake and Columbia to reach the Pacific Coast.

Sept 1806 : the expedition retruned to St Louis

    A great success :

    Their mission had been accomplished

It opened the way to settlers and American ideals

Written comprehension page 76 : Chief Joseph Speaks

Chief Joseph was the chief of the Nez Perce tribe.

He wanted peace and he promised never to make war with white men and to let them pass through their territory.

This was because of their encounter with Lewis and Clark who were friendly and were only passing through.

Unfortunately, the white men that came later found gold and decided to exploit the land.

This led to the trail of tears as whole populations were relocated :

They had to leave their homeland, walk miles and miles in the cold freezing weather of winter without blankets. They had to leave their dead behind.

A lot of them died of hunger on the way. Some froze to death. Others were shot as they tried to escape.

At first, Chief Joseph had helped the white men and tried to maintain peace by giving them land.  This was not enough. So he went to Washington D.C. to plead for his people, to ask that they be treated like men and not like animals. This did not help either.

    Heroes and role models:

A hero, in real life, is a person who does something exceptional.

A hero is a person who inspires me and makes me dream so I think heroes are very important.

Superheroes are fictional heroes who save the world, have superpowers and symbolize values like justice and courage so they are good role models for children. This is also why they always win because the value they represent gets to prevail. (= win)

Both heroes and superheroes help the powerless or people in need.

A role model is a real human being who we can identify with.  We can try to follow in their footsteps by embracing the same career as them for example.

There are many types of role models : record-breakers, peace-makers, explorers, scientists, athletes, war heroes, human rights fighters, earthkeepers.

Terry Fox was born on July the 28th, 1958 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. He spent his childhood near Vancouver.  In 1977, he had bone cancer and his right leg had to be amputated.

In hospital, he decided to run across Canada and raise money for cancer research in a journey called the Marathon of Hope whose goal was to get attention and get every Canadian to contribute 1$. He trained for 18 months preparing for his 5000-kilometre run. He started in St John's, Newfoundland on April 12th, 1980, covering 42 kilometres a day through Quebec and Ontario. By the end of his run in September 1980, he had covered 5373 km in 143 days.

Unfortunately, he died the following year but he is remembered as a hero and a Terry Fox Canadian dollar was issued in his honor in 2005. He became the first Canadian on coins! Today, the Terry Fox Run around the world is organized every year.  Unsurprisingly, its goal is to raise money for cancer research.
